Someone to Love Me (school)

Cindy is just starting the beginning of Freshman year, but already she has missed numerous days. Growing up,Cindy and her mother never really had a relationship because she did crack. Therefore, her Aunt Shirley would come over to watch her for days at a time. But when Cindy was 12, her aunt passed away from breast cancer. As a result, Lorraine, Cindy's mother, had to take over the mother role, unfortunately she didn't do a very good job. She had many boyfriends and really didn't mind if Cindy went to school or not.

Highschool for gabe

In this book Beautiful Music for Ugly Children  there is a guy named Gabe, who actually use to be Elizabeth Williams. He tells us about the struggles hes had to endure during his experience in high school. Such as being called names, and being bullying for his sexual preference.In the second chapter on page 26 says " i hear a snicker and a LESBO! from the back of the room as i slouch my way up there." a prime exmaple of her getting verbally bullied at times.

I can relate to this because i am a highschooler, and sometime i find myself in the same kind of predicament. i don't get talked about for the same reasons as Gabe does but sometime kids at school will talk about the way you look, or how you do certain things. Gabe deals with it by just reminding himself mentally that hes a senior and soon he'll be out of high school. I do the same.

Slaves were sent to Mr. Covey,a slave breaker, if they showed any type of resistance or attitude. So, Fredrick Douglass was sent to him as well. Mr Coveys job was to break you down physically and mentally. He was rented to Mr. Covey for one year, and for the first six months he explained that he had lost all hope of anything anymore. Covey had broke him down so badly he escaped to his old plantation and ask his prior slave owner for protection. Fredrick was only sent back. But one afternoon Fredrick made up in his mind that he would not stand for it and he put up a fight that lasted two hours straight.

How Fredrick Douglass relates to me?

I never knew Fredrick, and neither did Fredrick no me but, me and Fredrick has something in common. we were both born a statistic. No matter who you are or where you come from everyone comes into this world as that. Now, the choice is ours weather or not we choose to change that. Frederick Douglass for example wasn't taught how to read nor write, he went out and self taught himself. Me? well, i live in a period of time where you have the privilege of school.But! its our decision to apply ourselves or not. which me personally is the only way out of your statistic. Just like Fredrick "knowledge is the key to everything" because otherwise you have the ability to be taken advantage of.

Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass

This book is an autobiography about, not only the life of Fredrick Douglass but the everyday life of a slave. The setting goes back to when Fredrick was just a child living on the plantation. And how their living conditions where harsh and cruel. Fredrick didn't know how to read nor write,yet, he was determined to learn no matter what it took. That encouraged him to run away because if he gained knowledge he will gain power.

Teaching Chess and Life- Make predictions

Carlos shortly spoke about life in his neighborhood and how negatively influenced it was. " Many kids my age in Washington Heights wind up in gangs, as drug dealers,jail, or dead." So he vowed to not end up in one of those situations. With the help of Chia, it positively influenced him so he would stick by his decision. But what would the outcome if Chia never came into his life? And having read that he did, maybe Carlos went on to be a mentor to other children living in the same environment he was.

What is your favorite book or type of book?

•  I enjoy reading books such as drama, and young adult fiction.

What is one goal that you want to accomplish this year?

• One goal that i would like to accomplish this year, would to read different genres of books and expand my vocabulary.
